Message in a Bottle
(Activity designred by Jorge Alexandre)
Pre-listening:
Students will discuss some questions in order to set up the mood and introduce the topic. Some of them will have already taken cruises or maybe even experienced dangerous situations at sea. Be sure to give your group enough space for sharing their personal experiences.
While listening:
You can ask them to watch the video and talk about what they have just seen and heard. E.G.: What is the song about? How do you know? Then, ask them to listen again and fill the gaps.
Post-listening:
It's time to do some light work on vocabulary, followed by a few more questions. It's a nice chance to explore the metaphors presented by the song. Was the singer really stranded on an island, or is he talking about life in general?
To wrap things up, students will write a message in a bottle. This can be done in class or assigned as homework. Maybe you can have them share the messages with each other or perhaps post them on the classroom's walls.
